In Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional, why is the option to connect to a virtual private network unavailable?
If the option to create a virtual private network (VPN) connection is not available, you may not have the Remote Access Connection Manager service running. This service must be running in order to make VPN connections in Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional.

To determine if this service is running on your computer, follow these steps:

In Windows XP standard view, click Start, the Control Panel. In Windows XP Classic view or Windows 2000, click Start, then Settings, and then Control Panel.

Note: In Windows XP, the default view for the desktop is quite different from the Windows classic view (e.g., in Windows 2000), so navigating to certain items might be different in XP. There are several steps you can take to switch from the Windows XP default view to the Windows classic view. For more information, see the Knowledge Base document In Windows XP, how do I switch to the Windows classic view?

Double-click Administrative Tools. (If you are running Windows XP, and you do not see Administrative Tools, you may need to click the Switch to Classic View link on the left.)

Double-click Services.

Locate Remote Access Connection Manager in the list of services. Under the "Status" column, if the word "Started" does not appear, then the service is not running, and you will need to follow the steps below to enable it.
To enable the Remote Access Connection Manager, follow these steps:

Repeat steps 1-3 above to open the Services control panel.

Double-click Remote Access Connection Manager.

Under "Startup type:", choose Automatic. (This will make the service automatically start whenever you turn on your computer.)

Under "Service status", click Start.

Click OK, and then close the Services control panel.
The option to create a VPN connection should now be available.

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager - can't start (as in, "Could not start the remote access auto connection manager on local computer. error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start.")

Automated Edit:

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87) at:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm - dead link as of 1/6/03

To use the Regedit:

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Manual Edit:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP

Delete the subkeys listed except 13 and 4.

Standard Checkpoints:

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Set these three to "Automatic":

Remote Access Connection Manager

Remote Access Auto Connection Manager

Telephony.
