2.1. Additional instructions for users of Windows NT, 2000 and XP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you play the CD version of LBA and have spoken voices enabled, you will
be prompted to insert your CD after patching. Speech files need to be copied
to hard disk because Windows NT/2000/XP don't support the method used by LBA
for speech file transfers. You will need to run PATCH.EXE again or copy speech
files manually if you change the spoken language.
On some computers, it may be necessary to edit DOS application configuration
file AUTOEXEC.NT in SYSTEM32 directory inside the Windows directory. If LBA CD
version doesn't find its CD, verify that the following line exists in AUTOEXEC.NT
and has no REM prepended to it:
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
In Windows XP systems, AUTOEXEC.NT should also contain a line that enables
Sound Blaster 2 emulation:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 P330 T3
Numbers may be different (except for 3 after T), but all settings should be
present (including T3).
In case you don't have permission to modify the default AUTOEXEC.NT file,
save the edited file where you can and change properties for LBAWIN.EXE (or
shortcut) to use the modified version. Custom AUTOEXEC.NT may be specified in
the dialog that appears when you click "Windows" button on "Programs" tab.
It is very likely that LBA won't run in Windows NT and 2000 at the first
attempt. Try selecting "No sound" and "No music" in LBA setup. If the game
works without sound, you may need to update sound card drivers or install a
Sound Blaster emulator such as VDMSound (
www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/)
or SoundFX 2000 (
www.softsystem.co.uk/page4.htm). If displayed image is
totally messed, or you get a message about missing VESA support, see section 4
of this document.
