Will my Plextor drive make a working back-up of a SafeDisc protected game?
A In short:
-SafeDisc 1: yes
-SafeDisc 2: yes (but only the Plextor PX-W2410A, PX-W4012A/TU, PX-320A, PX-W4824A/TU)
-SafeDisc 2.51.021: yes, although you need software help like CloneCD's 'Amplify Weak Sectors' option.
Longer answer:
There are many SafeDisc versions. The first version (1) is very easily copied by any writer that can write in DAO or SAO-RAW. But then came SafeDisc 2 which defeated many writers, including the current Plex 12x and 16x models. There were some rumours that certain TLA# could do SafeDisc 2 but hard proof was never released. SafeDisc 2 was defeated again with the Plextor 24x models and up. They could make a working back-up of SafeDisc 2 without any additional help of programs like BetaBlocker. Up to SafeDisc 2 version 2.40 everything was fine.. Then the ATIP protection was introduced which included a check to see if the used disc was a CD-Recordable. Not a problem when playing the back-up from a normal CD-Rom/DVD-Rom but you have to use CloneCD's 'Hide CDR Media' to be able to play the game from your writer. Then came SafeDisc 2.51.020 (Tiger Woods) and 2.51.021 (Medal of Honor, GTA3). Some Plextor can copy SafeDisc 2.51.020 just fine but they will all fail with version 2.51.021. But no need to start worrying! CloneCD has introduced 'Amplify Weak Sectors' for these writers to help them make working back-ups. My personal experience is that AWS works very well with the Plextor drives and they now can make a working back-up of SafeDisc 2.51.021. There's no guarantee though! Some people have reported that it still doesn't work.
Q How do I use AWS for my Plextor and when should I use it?
A Because the Plextor writers are 'one-sheep EFM burners' you can leave AWS enabled at all times. Two sheep burners must have it disabled. AWS is enabled by default in CloneCD but you need to check if you're living in the US or Japan if it's enabled. When starting the write process right click on the drive. Choose settings. Can you Select 'Allow AWS'? If so then select it. If not then use this tool to enable it (comments here):
When AWS is allowed for your writer you have to also enabled it in the CloneCD Profiles! The default Game Profile already uses it. You can also download custom Profiles right here. Note that the latest CloneCD version not also has an 'emulate weak sectors' option. This is normally not needed for Plextor drives, they only need amplification to do the job. If that doesn't work you can try emulate but in order to play the emulate back-up you always need to have CloneCD installed and 'Hide CDR Media' enabled (more info)
Q Can the Plextor recorders copy the latest SecuROM copy-protections?
A Well until now there is only one drive that can perfectly copy SecuROM v4.8 and that is the Plextor Premium drive. In combination with the Blindwrite software (4.5.3 or above) the drive is able to make a perfect copy of this protection. For more information see this thread. More information on copying SecuROM with other drive can be found here (using CloneCD) and here (using Alcohol 120%).
