Microsoft(R) Windows XP
1.
Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Information. The System Information window will open.
2.
In the System Information window, click the plus sign ( +) next to Software Environment.
3.
Double-click Running Tasks and verify that Svchost.exe is listed.
When SVCHOST.EXE is listed
1.
Close the System Information window.
2.
Go to the section, “Checking button configuration” .
When SVCHOST.EXE is not listed
1.
Click Start, and then Run. The Run window will open.
2.
In the dialogue box, type svchost.exe and then click OK.
3.
Try scanning.
Checking button configuration
The following steps will verify that the scanner buttons are turned on and that the correct program is set to start by pushing the scanner buttons.
1.
Open the Events tab in the Scanners and Cameras window from the Control Panel.

Windows XP:
1.
Select Start, then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window will open.
2.
Double-click the Scanners and Cameras icon. The Scanners and Cameras window will open.
3.
Highlight the scanner and then click File. From the drop-down menu, click Properties. The Scanner Properties window will open.
4.
Click the Events tab to open it (Figure 1).

2.
In the Select an event drop-down window (Figure 2), select a button to program.
3.
In the Actions section, verify that Start this program is selected (Figure 3).
4.
In the Start This Program field (Figure 4), verify that the desired program is set to start when the button is pushed.
5.
Repeat Steps 6-8 for each button. When finished, click Apply, and then click OK to close the window.
6.
Try the front panel buttons on the scanner.

Updating the scanner buttons
The following steps will refresh the scanner’s front panel buttons to reflect any changes that have been made.
1.
Click Start, click Programs, click HP Scanjet Utilities, and then click HP Scanjet Button Options.
2.
Click the General tab, and then click Update.
3.
Try the front panel buttons on the scanner.
Taking the scanner out of Power Save mode
The following steps will verify that the scanner is out of Power Save mode.
1.
Push the POWER SAVE button on the scanner and make sure the display reads READY.
2.
Try the front panel buttons on the scanner.
