1stPage is a remarkably good HTML editor, considering that it's freeware. The interface is similar to Homesite, so much so that both packages were probably produced in the same development environment using similar components. Many of the functions, such as the right-click popup menus, are similar, and sometimes better, than Homesite's. It's packed with features, including tag colour coding, project management, interactive colour picker, an internal browser, and a table wizard. It's also quite user-friendly, with four user levels: Easy, Normal, Expert, and Hardcore. What really makes the download worthwhile, though, are the added extras: a full HTML 4 reference with Web authoring FAQs, over 400 ready-to-use Javascripts, and 14 'ready-rolled' DHTML scripts.
On the downside, though, it doesn't have Homesite's extended search and replace facility, tag editing is limited to a few tags, there's no frame wizard (a particular nuisance for novices), and the application help documentation is very sparse so that you have to learn how to use the package without guidance. Still, when you're getting such a good package for free you can't expect everything.
