Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
Note: Your computer must be configured to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. For more information about how to configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, see your computer's documentation, or contact your computer's manufacturer.
The following message appears on the “Welcome to Setup” screen:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
When you see this message, press R to start Recovery Console.
Type the number of the installation you want to repair. If you have only one installation of Windows on the computer, type 1, and then press ENTER.
Enter the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
Type the following commands to start the manual removal:
cd $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst
batch spuninst.txt
exit
Restart the computer
Open Regedit.exe and set the following registry key to Local System:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs\ObjectName“
Run %windir%\$<updatebackupdirectory>$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. This will roll back any registry changes, execute any processes that need to be run, and so on.
During this manual removal, you might encounter several "Access Denied" error messages. This is expected. This occurs because the batch file is trying to copy files that are in use and cannot be accessed.
If this method does not work, you can remove the software update by repairing the Windows installation using the original Windows CD-ROM that you used to install the operating system.
Note: If a software update installation fails after files have started copying, the package installer will attempt to roll back the installation by calling Spuninst.exe directly. The package installer will try to restore the computer to its original state, but it might be necessary to perform one of the removal methods listed previously to remove the partially updated files.
Command-line Options for Removing Software Updates
The following command-line options are supported for removing software updates:
/passive
/quiet
/warnrestart
/promptrestart
/norestart
/forcerestart

For details about these options, see Command-line Options.
Order of Removal
Software updates must be removed in the reverse of the order in which they were installed. This means that, to keep the files on the operating system consistent, you must remove the most recently installed Windows software update first, remove the next most recently installed software update next, and so on.
If you attempt to remove software updates in the wrong order, and the removal is in attended mode (requiring user interaction), the following error message will appear:
Setup detected the following programs on your computer:
List of software updates and applications
If <software update> is removed, these programs may not run correctly.
If the removal was run in unattended mode, it will fail without displaying an error message, and the details of the failure will be recorded in the software update removal log file. See Log Names and Location for details.
For detailed information about removing software updates, see article 823836, “Removing Windows software updates in the wrong order may cause the operating system to stop functioning,” in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
Important: We do not recommend removing security updates because this can leave your computer in unprotected state that could compromise its security.
