1. Boot from the CD using the first (default) menu option for Start/Install LIve CD (I did not have to make any changes/additions by pressing F6).
2. When the screen went blank (my monitor clicks when the resolution changes) press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get a command prompt (I had to press it a few times before the command prompt came up).
3. At the command prompt type sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
*remember to add a space between reconfigure and -phigh*
When the configure screen comes up I chose 1024x768 and pressed the spacebar to select that resolution, then pressed "enter" to confirm the selection and save the changes, and it dropped me back to a command prompt.
4. I then pressed CTRL+ALT+F7 (I'm not sure if this is necessary but that's what I did)
5. I then pressed CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and found myself at the login screen with the liveCD desktop displayed. I waited until the prompt timed out (did not enter a username or password - could probably have just pressed "enter")
6. Installed 7.10 from there. So far so good. I wish you all well.
