Here is the step-by-step guide how you should install the beta7-driver if you encounter issues:
Uninstall all drivers and the tools through the software-agent of your OS.
Make sure you have SP1 and DX8.1b redist installed (it never minds if directplay 8.2 is also installed).
Manually (via the device manager) force the PC to use the Diamond Monster drivers (called: "Diamond Multimedia Monster Fusion Z100" - you need to deactivate the setting for "show only compatible hardware" to show it for you) for your display adapter and reboot.
Delete this registry key:
hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/services/3dfxvs
Delete 3dfxvs.dll, glide2x.dll, glide3x.dll, opengl32.dll and 3dfxOGL.dll from your Windows\System32 directory. The 3dfxvs.dll and the opengl32.dll will return after some seconds so don't worry about it. Than reboot
Run the driver-installer executable you downloaded (beta7.exe). Reboot when prompted at the end of the install sequence.
Run dxdiag's d3d tests. If d3d 8 tests run successfully, you have successfully installed the drivers.
This workround is from DEVO and I have tested it myself so I guarantee that it works (I also had some issues during installation before, because I didn't use step 3).
