Outlook vs. Outlook Express
Firstly, don't go by name. Just because they have similar names doesn't mean they are similar. Outlook is not a nickname for Outlook Express.
Outlook Express is for dealing with just email. This is a free program and is included with Windows and Internet Explorer. I use Outlook Express version 6. Download version 6 here (it comes as part of Internet Explorer). There are also Macintosh versions of Outlook Express.
Outlook handles your emails but also handles your calendar, contacts, and to-do lists.
In a corporate environment, booking meetings, book a meeting with auto notices sent out and reserving conference rooms are a breeze with Outlook, particularly if several people need access your schedule. Outlook is NOT a free program and is included with Microsoft's Office suite.
Some say Outlook Express is for home users who need an easy and reliable e-mail reader but businesses still like to use it because of it's simplicity. Particularly if you use another database program and/or electronic calendar.
How to Decide Which Suits Your Needs?
Choose Outlook Express if:
You require only e-mail sending and receiving and want to keep things simple.
Choose Outlook if:
You require e-mail sending and receiving.
You require integrated personal calendars, group scheduling, task and contact management.
And ... if you choose to use Outlook Express, web designer/marketer Nicky Jurd of
www.cityofcairns.com says ... "Many viruses target Outlook Express users specifically, because it is the common belief that home users with little knowledge of the internet use Outlook Express, and are therefore easy targets."
Database Tip
Do not enter your email addresses into Outlook Express groups without first adding them to the address book. They cannot be extracted. Next issue I will cover the best way to store your database - simply.
